The Itoigawa Shimpaku is an important, living part of our heritage to be celebrated and passed down to Itoigawa’s future generations. To ensure the responsible management and sustainable appreciation of the Itoigawa Shimpaku and its natural habitats, we launched the Itoigawa Shimpaku Project in 2020.
Deep in the rocky mountains of Itoigawa Geopark—where water and nutrients are scarce and the weather can be harsh and unyielding,—grows a hardy yet elegant variety of juniper known as the Itoigawa Shimpaku. Its elegant form contrasting with its rugged natural environment have made it celebrated among collectors as the “King of Bonsai.”
